Philanthropist Louis Bacon has announced a conservation
partnership with Colorado Open Lands to place 21,000 acres of his Tercio Ranch
and Red River Ranch in perpetuity.
In effect, the easement will create an unprecedented wildlife
conservation corridor of nearly 800,000 acres stretching from southern Colorado
to northern New Mexico.
Louis Bacon’s donation will form one of the largest
protected wildlife sanctuaries in the world, featuring a range of habitats
including mountains, rivers, and valleys.

Locals and government officials alike spoke highly of
Bacon’s most recent conservation efforts.
“We’ve done some remarkable things with conservation, but
we’ve done it because of the partnerships, said Mike King, Executive Director
of the Department of Natural Resources. “We’ve done it because we’ve had people
like Mr. Bacon who are dedicated to making sure that Colorado fifty and one
hundred years from now is a place that will be as special to us and our grandchildren
and their kids as it is to the current generation, and that takes a vision; it
takes a commitment. The partnership with a conservationist like Mr.
Bacon…really does make things like this today possible.”
Steve Guertin, Deputy
Director U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, also spoke at the
announcement.
“We’re here to applaud Louis Bacon for his leadership, his
vision, and his dedication to conservation and this enormous gift that he’s
given to the folks here in the region, in the state of Colorado, and
nationwide,” he said. “We’re all in to work in the years and years and decades
to come with this partnership as we all collectively move forward.”
