The North Carolinian affiliate of Louis Bacon’s Moore
Charitable Foundation is now supporting the Historic Wilmington Foundation in
order to promote and preserve the historic Lower Cape Fear Region.
The Historic Wilmington Foundation, that works to preserve
the architectural heritage of the area, will create a new guided walking tour
and e-tour program to highlight the importance in preserving the area.
The non-profit organization preservation organisation has
successfully saved over 100 historic properties from demolition since it was
first established in 1966.
Louis Bacon and the Orton Foundation’s work is usually focussed on protecting and
improving water, forests and threatened habitats in eastern North Carolina
where Louis Bacon has a direct ancestral history.
Orton Foundation works to preserve land and habitat by protecting
rivers and wetlands, the foundation also supports educational and community
organizations in the region.
The 3,000 acres Orton Plantation has already been placed
into a protective easement by Louis Bacon and is now in possession of the North
Caroline Coastal Land Trust which also runs the 31 acres at Springer’s Point, Ocracoke
Island reserve thanks to Bacon.
Louis Bacon is also lending his support to the Orton
Plantation’s original long-leaf pine forest which provides important habitat
for endangered species such as the red-cockaded woodpecker.
Bacon provides support for eastern North Carolina
organizations including the historic Oakdale Cemetery, the University of North
Carolina – Wilmington Department of History.
Through his Moore Charitable Foundation, Louis Bacon has
been donating and raising the profile of worthy causes since 1994. While famous
for donating lands to conservation projects, Bacon has also donated millions to
charitable causes and used his business acumen and contacts to further unsung
causes.
